Dieses Skriptum richtet sich vorzugsweise an Studenten der Soziologie, die sich um ein Verständnis elementarer Verfahren und häufig verwendeter Ma zahlen der beschreibenden Statistik bemühen. Man kann wohl sagen, da die quantitative Auswertung sozial wissenschaftlich relevanter Daten ohne Kenntnis dieser Verfahren und Ma zahlen ebensowenig denkbar ist wie die Interpretation eines gro en Teils publizierter sozialwissen- schaftlicher Forschungsergebnisse. Der vorliegende Band konzentriert sich auf die Darstellung und Erläuterung elementarer statistischer Konzepte und Metho- den, die in der empirischen Sozialforschung eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Eines dieser Konzepte ist das der statisti- schen Beziehung (Assoziation, Korrelation). Wie aus dem Inhaltsverzeichnis hervorgeht, nimmt die Darstellung jener Verfahren und Ma zahlen den grö ten Raum dieses Skriptums ein, die der Beschreibung bivariater (zweidimensionaler) Verteilungen bzw. Tabellen dienen. Die Auswahl der im bi- variaten Teil (Kapitel 4 bis 8) dargestellten Assoziations- koeffizienten orientiert sich primär an deren Anwendbarkeit auf Daten, mit denen es der empirische Sozialforscher häufig zu tun hat. Dabei wird einigen Ma zahlen ein besonderes Gewicht gegeben, die im Sinne der proportionalen bzw. relati- ven Fehlerreduktion interpretierbar sind, kurz PRE-Ma e (engl.: proportional reduction in error measures) genannt. Für die Auswahl der behandelten Assoziationsma e wurden zwei spezifische Selektionskriterien herangezogen: erstens die Häufigkeit ihrer Verwendung in neueren sozialwissenschaft- lichen Forschungsbeiträgen sowie zweitens die Möglichkeit ihrer Berechnung mit Hilfe von Datenanalysesystemen, die in den sozialwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen vorrangig benutzt werden (BMDP, DATA-TEXT, OSIRIS, vor allem SPSS). Die meisten der verwendeten Illustrationsbeispiele entstammen der Jungeren soziologischen Forschungsliteratur.
