Die Forschungsintensitat auf dem Gebiet schallnaher Stromungen hat bereits vor einigen Jahren ihren Gipfel iiberschritten, obwohl ganz wesentliche Fragen noch ungeklal't sind und das praktische Interesse an der Klarung solcher Fragen mit Riicksicht auf die zivile und mili- tarische Luftfahrt weiter anwachsen sollte. Aber ahnlich wie auf anderen Gebieten der Stromungslehre, beispielsweise auf jenem der Turbulenz, hat man inzwischen auch bei schallnahel' Stromung gelernt, fiir den praktischen Gebrauch einigermaBen zurechtzukommen. Damit ist ein Nachlassen der Unterstiitzungsbereitschaft der staatlichen und industriellen Geldgeber verbunden, zumal auf anderen Teilgebieten der Gasdynamik, wie beispielsweise jenen der Hyperschallstromung, der extremen thermodynamischen Zustande und der Magnetogasdynamik viele Fragen noch vollig unbeantwortet sind. Fiir den Grundlagenforscher wie fiir den Mathematiker besitzt die schallnahe Stromung jedoch ihre unveranderten Reize. Es ist zu wiin- schen, daB dieses Interesse fUr die Grundlagenforschung auf trans- sonischem Gebiete wach bleibt bis ein durchgebildetes Lehrgebaude errichtet ist, dessen Pflege dann trotzdem noch fortlaufend starke wissenschaftliche Krafte binden wird. Es besteht ja immer die Gefahr, daB die Vernachlassigung eines wichtigen und eigenartigen Grundlagen- gebietes sich bald als auBerst kurzsichtig erweist. Aber auch angesichts des riesigen Aufwandes, den die einschlagige Versuchstechnik gegen- wartig laufend bedingt, ist jede Miihe zum Erzielen eines Fortschrittes in der Klarung del' Grundlagen oder in der Vereinfachung der Berech- nungsmethoden gerechtfertigt. Wenn der Generalrat der IUTAM also die Abhaltung eines Symposiums iiber schallnahe Stromungen be- schlossen hat, so hat er in gleich, er Weise im Interesse der Grundlagen- forschung wie im Interesse der Praxis gehandelt.
