Die Konstruktion bestimmt den Entwurf eines Bauwerkes neben der Funktion, der Wirtschaftlichkeit und der formalen Gestaltung als gleichberechtigten Kompo- nenten. Mitwirkende Faktoren sind dariiber hinaus ortliche Verhaltnisse, rechtliche Bindungen, einschrankende Vorschriften, politische Absichten, Neigungen zu Tradi- tion und Prestige usw. Architekt und Ingenieur haben diese Forderungen aufeinander abzustimmen und damit eine schwere und stets neue Aufgabe zu bewaltigen. Es ist oft zu beobachten, daB eine ausgewogene Synthese der vier Hauptkomponenten, die aus verstandnisvoller und sorgfaltiger Zusammenarbeit gleichwertiger Partner hervorgeht, sich sowohl in der Harmonie des Gesamtbauwerkes als auch der Einzel- teile deutlich auspragt. Vorbedingung hierzu ist der rechtzeitige Kontakt zwischen Bau-Ingenieur und -Kiinstler und deren Fahigkeit, die Arbeitsweise des anderen zu verstehen. Nur so laBt sich der RiB iiberbriicken, der in der ersten Halfte des vorigen lahrhunderts aus dem' universellen "Baumeister" zwei spezialisierte Bauberufe werden lieB. Diese Spaltung war der Preis fUr das Werkzeug "Naturwissenschaft", das erst die technische Entwicklung des Bauwesens bis zu seiner heutigen Hohe ermoglichte. Die harmonische Gestaltung von Bauwerken ist deshalb jetzt - bis auf wenige Ausnahmen - nur in enger Gemeinschaftsarbeit der Spezialisten moglich. Die modemen Bauweisen haben ihren Ursprung in der allgemeinen Entwicklung der Technik, die, durch die politischen Verhaltnisse begiinstigt, als "erste technische Revolution" bezeichnet worden ist. In jenen lahrzehnten der ersten Halfte des vorigen lahrhunderts forderten einerseits Industrie Ulid Handel sowie Transport und Lagerung wachsender Warenmengen und Verkehrsbediirfnisse neue, leistungs- fahigere Bauweisen, andererseits konnten Stahl und Zement erst im Zeitalter der Kraftmaschinen in groBen Mengen wirtschaftlich hergestellt werden.
