This book is a study in vertically polarized antennas at HF as well as VHF and UHF. Using software modeling, as well as measuring physical models, useful data has been found regarding vertical antennas. While writing my previous book, "Antennas as Transmission Lines: Linear Antenna Analysis and Design Requiring Only Algebra and Trigonometry", I discovered disagreements between antenna books and modeling. I discovered many fallacies that have become entrenched, and over time are being presented as fact, what I have come to call "antenna folklore." There are no vertical "monopoles", only bent dipoles. Some are partly above ground, some are on or very near the ground. The primary goal in this vertical antenna book was not to create another book filled with old fallacies that perpetuate antenna folklore. My secondary goal, where possible, was not to take anything in a book at face value that I could test and/or measure for myself. This book will help you better understand how to get the best from vertical antennas. I wrote this book after being forced to go vertical due to HOA restrictions. But, it is applicable for anyone who wants to build a vertical or, is a SOTA or POTA operator. The 68 Topics of this book will take you from basic theory, to working examples, useful suggestions for construction, impedance matching and the importance of the "choke balun" to isolate the coax and antenna. Whether it's a monopole with a counterpoise, or radials, or just a vertical dipole There will be a topic in this book.
