Die rasche Entwicklung der Nachrichtentechnik hat dazu geführt, da nicht alle ihre wichtigen Gebiete gleichmä ig im deutschen Schrift- tum vertreten sind. Insbesondere fiel es uns im Alltagsleben unserer Laboratoriumsarbeit immer wieder auf, da zwar die Kenntnisse und Vorstellungen von der Umwandlung und Übertragung andauernder sinusförmiger Schwingungen weit verbreitet sind, da aber das Wissen um die impulsförmigen Vorgänge viele Lücken aufweist. Verbunden damit ist die Erfahrung, da die beiden Vorstellungsweisen der Nach- richtentechnik - die spektrale und die zeitliche - sich bei den meisten Ingenieuren noch nicht zu einem harmonischen, jederzeit austausch- baren Bild vereint haben. Einen guten Einblick in diese Zusammen- hänge bietet das Gebiet der Modulation, besonders wenn man es so weit fa t, da die Einflüsse der Übertragungsverzerrungen und der Geräusche inbegriffen sind. Von diesem Gesichtspunkt aus schien es lIDS eine reiz- volle und nützliche Aufgabe zu sein, eine neuere Darstellung des Gesamt- gebietes der Modulationsvorgänge zu geben. Wir mu ten jedoch bald einsehen, da wir ein so weites Thema neben unserer Industrietätigkeit schlecht würden bewältigen können. So haben wir uns auf die Schil- derung der impulsförmigen Vorgänge beschränkt und selbst hierbei manche Gebiete fortgelassen, wie etwa die Probleme der Tastung von Gro sendern. Indessen erwies es sich auch für eine Darstellung des engeren Ge- bietes der Pulsmodulation als notwendig, wenigstens im Überblick die Arten und Eigenschaften der anderen Modulationsverfahren zu betrach- ten - im wesentlichen der gewöhnlichen Amplituden- und Winkel- modulation und ihrer Kombinationen. Ein gro er Teil des ersten Kapi- tels ist dieser Übersicht gewidmet.
