Questo studio valuta la variazione delle dimensioni delle particelle dei sottoprodotti della macinazione a secco del mais per la produzione di etanolo mediante l'uso di energia ultrasonica, al fine di aumentare la produzione di biogas derivante dalla digestione anaerobica di tali sottoprodotti, ovvero: granella essiccata di distilleria con solubili (DDGS), solidi, distillato leggero e sciroppo di mais. I campioni di coprodotti sono stati trattati con varie condizioni ultrasoniche e confrontati con campioni non trattati (campione di controllo). L'ampiezza ultrasonica � stata variata da 52,8 mpp a 160 mpp e il tempo di sonicazione � stato variato da 10 a 50 s. I campioni sono stati caratterizzati mediante microscopia elettronica a scansione e microscopia ottica (SEM, OM) e analisi della distribuzione delle particelle (PDA). � stato riscontrato che con le sospensioni solido/liquido (DDGS, solidi) si � verificata una significativa riduzione della dimensione delle particelle, aumentando il rapporto superficie/volume, con il possibile miglioramento della resa di biogas durante la digestione anaerobica di questi materiali. Nel caso della vinaccia diluita e dello sciroppo di mais, i risultati sono stati sorprendenti in quanto si � osservato un aumento della dimensione delle particelle.
