L'industria conciaria genera grandi quantit� di rifiuti solidi durante la lavorazione delle pelli e, successivamente, durante il trattamento degli effluenti. In quest'ottica, il presente studio ha valutato le pratiche di gestione dei rifiuti solidi e ne ha effettuato la caratterizzazione fisico-chimica, al fine di proporre soluzioni adeguate per la gestione dei rifiuti solidi delle concerie. La valutazione effettuata ha mostrato che i tipi di rifiuti solidi delle concerie sono: sale depolverato, ritagli di pelle grezza, peli, scarti di sgrossatura, scarti di spaccatura, ritagli di decapaggio, rasature di cromo, ritagli di crosta, ritagli di pelle finita e fanghi. I tassi di generazione di ciascun tipo di questi rifiuti solidi sono stati determinati utilizzando tecniche di analisi del bilancio di massa. I rifiuti solidi sono stati caratterizzati in base a pH, contenuto di umidit�, composti organici volatili, contenuto di ceneri, potere calorifico, contenuto di carbonio, contenuto totale di azoto, rapporto carbonio/azoto, contenuto di cromo, contenuto di sodio e contenuto di calcio utilizzando metodi standard di analisi dei rifiuti solidi. Sulla base delle caratteristiche fisico-chimiche dei rifiuti solidi, sono state proposte due opzioni tecnologiche termochimiche di base per la conversione dei rifiuti in energia: il processo di conversione biochimica e il compostaggio.
