""American Notes for General Circulation"" is a travelogue written by Charles Dickens, chronicling his journey to the United States and Canada in 1842. The book is divided into two parts, with the first part detailing his experiences in the eastern United States, including New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. Dickens offers his observations on American culture, politics, and society, as well as his impressions of the people he meets along the way. The second part of the book focuses on his travels through Canada, including Montreal, Quebec City, and Niagara Falls. Throughout the book, Dickens provides a critical commentary on the state of American society, particularly its treatment of African Americans and Native Americans. The book was controversial upon its publication, with some Americans taking offense to Dickens' criticisms, while others praised his insights. Today, ""American Notes for General Circulation"" is considered a valuable historical document, providing a unique perspective on the United States during the mid-19th century.The most comfortable of all the hotels of which I had any experience in the United States, and they were not a few, is Barnum's, in that city: where the English traveller will find curtains to his bed, for the first and probably the last time in America (this is a disinterested remark, for I never use them); and where he will be likely to have enough water for washing himself, which is not at all a common case.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
