El Diario de la navegación y reconocimiento del río Tebicuary es uno de los varios de libros de viajes que escribió Azara. Sus trabajos dedicados a establecer, de forma científica, las fronteras entre las colonias españolas y las portuguesas. Esta actividad aparece también, entre otros textos suyos, en su Correspondencia oficial.

Félix Azara estudió la geografía de Sudamérica y esclareció en sus mapas el curso de ríos y el lugar de montañas. Antes de él, aquellos territorios habían sido meramente indicados, en mapas inexactos, por los expedicionarios de los primeros tiempos de la Conquista de América.

En la Introducción de Pedro de Angelis, al Diario de la navegación y reconocimiento del río Tebicuary de Félix de Azara se comenta en detalle la relevancia de este libro:

Tres siglos de negociaciones y tratados no bastaron a poner de acuerdo las Cortes de Madrid y Lisboa sobre el deslinde de sus colonias, y estas cuestiones, que habían empezado con su dominación en América, no terminaron con su decadencia. Cada paso que daban, aumentaba las dudas y hacía más difícil su resolución; porque carecían de un conocimiento exacto de las localidades, ni podían adquirirlo por falta de documentos.

Después de haber conferenciado en Tordesillas, en Badajoz, en Lisboa, en Utrecht, sin poder llegar a un avenimiento, y dejando en toda su obscuridad el espíritu de las concesiones hechas por Alejandro VI en su famosa bula de 1593, volvieron las dos potencias a negociar en Madrid y en San Ildefonso, por los años 1750 y 1777. La causa que había paralizado el primero de estos tratados, había desaparecido con la expulsión de los Jesuitas, y todo anunciaba una fácil y pronta ejecución del segundo.

La Corte de Madrid, que había acreditado siempre celo y lealtad en el cumplimiento de sus promesas, nombró comisarios para que, de acuerdo con los portugueses, trazasen la nueva línea divisoria; y se apresuró a dar todas las instrucciones que creyó necesarias para dejar cumplidas las últimas estipulaciones.

Estos trabajos geodésicos, que abrazaban un espacio inmenso, desde los parajes inmediatos al Río de la Plata hasta las bocas de las Amazonas, rodeando en todo su ámbito la frontera interior del Brasil, fueron confiados a varias comisiones, que se procuró formar de oficiales activos e inteligentes. Uno de ellos fue el señor de Azara.
