El libro analiza los violentos procesos históricos, políticos y económicos experimentados por décadas en los Estados Unidos y con mayor fuerza dentro del Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico. Ello estará acompañado de un estudio sobre las teorías y los saberes criminológicos que han sido empleados para hacer posible tales procesos. Se explica cómo unos grupos sociales poderosos se impusieron e imponen sobre las masas creando subjetividades criminales, además de lograr crear una sociedad más violenta y tolerante frente a la criminalidad. Los grandes intereses económicos, mediante sus marionetas políticas, han logrado generar un orden social simbiótico; una empresa que por décadas ha triunfado fracasando. En pocas palabras, ambos sectores se han beneficiado y benefician de la criminalidad. No sólo se trata de hacer una crítica a éstos sectores sobre sus estrategias políticas, económicas y criminológicas, sino de denunciar por qué mantienen las cosas como siempre han sido y explicar, contrario a su ideología represiva, cómo se pueden aplicar otras formas de prevención e intervención criminológica más efectivas y menos dañinas para beneficio de todos.

El profesor Joel A. Villa Rodríguez nació en Ponce, Puerto Rico. Desde temprana edad sintió interés sobre por qué las personas se desviaban de las pautas sociales. Por ello hizo estudios dentro del campo de la sociología y ha dedicado gran parte de su vida a estudiar dicho fenómeno. Posee un bachillerato en criminología de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico (PUCPR), Recinto de Ponce, cursó estudios a nivel de maestría en sociología de la Universidad de Puerto Rico (UPR), Recinto de Río Piedras, luego se marchó a España y se doctoró en sociología de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM). Tienes dos libros publicados, uno llamado "SPSS: análisis estadístico simplificado" y otro "El sujeto criminal, crimen y criminalidad". Por más de una década ha publicado innumerables columnas periodísticas sobre asuntos relacionados a la violencia y criminalidad. Actualmente se desempeña como profesor a tarea completa de la Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Ponce. El profesor Gary Gutiérrez Renta nació en Ponce, Puerto Rico. Cuando joven era un entusiasta de la fotografía y eventualmente trabajó como fotógrafo para varios de los diarios más importantes del país. Eventualmente hizo su bachillerato en periodismo y se interesó en los problemas de violencia y criminalidad de la Isla. Así hizo su maestría en justicia criminal de la Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico (UIPR). Ha escrito innumerables columnas periodísticas sobre temas relacionados a la violencia y criminalidad. También ha sido consultado por los diarios más respetables del país sobre los temas de interés criminológico. Ha sido comentarista de WPAB-Ponce, la Revista Diálogo y el Periódico Claridad. Actualmente se encuentra retirado; aunque sigue activamente como columnista permanente en los medios de comunicación como El Post Antillano, 80 grados y La Perla del Sur. También se desempeña como profesor a tarea parcial de la Universidad Interamericana, Recinto de Ponce.
