Le récit de l'aventure de Pierre Beaujour et de Jean De Lacroix décrit la situation terrifiante des réfugiés haïtiens. Pierre et Jean voulaient connaître un meilleur sort mais des obstacles formidables leur barraient le passage, les acculant à la ruine et à la mort. Tout commença une nuit de Juin, au début de l'été. Pierre et Jean quittaient Haïti à la recherche de la fortune. Dans un autre pays, ils espéraient réaliser leur rêve de liberté et de bien-être économique. La Mirabelle, bateau faisant la navette entre Haïti et les Bahamas, fut le principal théâtre de leur tragédie. Au coeur de la nuit, les deux amis prirent place sur le bateau à destination de Nassau. Ils travaillèrent dans l'île pendant huit ans et accumulèrent assez d'argent pour retourner dans leur pays. Une fois de plus, ils décidèrent de voyager sur le navire; mais une surprise mortelle les attendait: Jean est tué et Pierre, grièvement blessé, est abandonné à la mer. Les parents des deux jeunes hommes connurent des heures d'angoisse indescriptible. Chantale, la fiancée de Jean, fut particulièrement touchée par les événements. Ce dernier revenait en Haïti pour l'épouser. Dans la ville de Port-de-Paix, leur histoire d'amour devint légendaire. Au cours des débats publics organisés pour exercer des pressions sur les autorités afin de les porter à arrêter les coupables, Chantale devint la muse des poètes de la ville. Gobino Chalamar père, le propriétaire de La Mirabelle, avait des relations politiques lui permettant de poser impunément des actes crapuleux. Lors de leur traversée vers Nassau, les deux jeunes hommes avaient voyagé en sa compagnie et avaient fait l'expérience de sa rage et de son arrogance. A leur retour vers Haïti, Gobino Chalamar fils était le capitaine du bateau. Sadique comme son père, le jeune marin montra un dédain incroyable de la vie humaine. Jean et Pierre se trouvaient sous sa protection et tombèrent victimes de sa cruauté. Leur histoire mémorable a été à l'origine d'événements extraordinaires dans la ville de Port-de-Paix. Sous la pression populaire, les autorités prirent les dispositions nécessaires pour arrêter les coupables. Honnis de leurs compatriotes, ces derniers subirent les conséquences d'une action criminelle qui causa beaucoup de troubles à travers la région. Ayant échappé miraculeusement à la mort, Pierre narra l'aventure effroyable au cours de laquelle il faillit perdre la vie. Son récit bouleversant éclaira les habitants de Port-de-Paix sur les actions horribles des coyotes de la mer.
