Every family, touched by violent crime, is flooded with a range of emotional trauma that is beyond the range of normal human experience. There is no end to the damage, and no healing; most victims and survivors find the term 'closure' a meaningless, empty word. We learn to live with the life that is thrust upon us as a means of survival and after time our smiles return but never the life we knew before. It is these thoughts and lessons that we hope to share.

From high school, the Air Force, meeting and marying Katherine, the birth of our four children and my five years at Purdue and my years in architecture are part of the character that I have become. However, the impact of a knock on our door on May 18, 1983 signaled the beginning of a new and different life for my family and me. That evening, the Medical Examiner had come to advise us that the body of our missing thirteen-year old son Patrick were recovered that afternoon and his death was by homicidal violence. Since tragic day, I have acquired a wealth of experience and knowledge gained in no other way. My work with crime victims developed a focus on the perilous journey all victims must endure. As a victim advocate, I participated in the recovery of runaways, walkaways, and assisted in the recovery of a suicide victim. We led in the recovery of a homicide victim and our volunteers discovered evidence of a homicide, five years before the recovery of the young girl. This case was chronicled by Jack Olsen in the Salt of the Earth; St. Martin's Press. This evidence led to the Aggravated First Degree Murder conviction of her killer. The Value of A Smile began as a catharsis after Katherine's death in 1993 and presents the impact of homicide on our family and an understanding of the pain and fears that every victim and survivor faces.
