Martial India by Francis Yeats-Brown is a tribute to the bravery, discipline, and traditions of Indian soldiers, particularly during World War II. Drawing from his tours of Indian military camps and battlefields in Burma, Yeats-Brown explores the spirit, loyalty, and cultural ethos of India’s martial communities. The book reflects his admiration for Indian troops and their role in the British Empire’s war efforts. Despite his controversial politics, Yeats-Brown’s portrayal is respectful and insightful, celebrating the valor of Indian warriors.
Francis Yeats-Brown (1886–1944) was a British Indian Army officer and celebrated author, best known for The Lives of a Bengal Lancer, which won the 1930 James Tait Black Prize and inspired a Hollywood film. He served in World War I, was captured and imprisoned by the Turks, and later turned to writing. Though admired for his vivid accounts of colonial India and interest in mysticism and yoga, his public support for fascism and Hitler tarnished his reputation in later years.
