The famous Scottish Clyde Steamers belong to a past age, but still within living memory. This collection of stories about life on board the paddle steamers including the Waverley, which is the last sea going paddle steamer in the world and gives the reader a peep of life below decks as well as a view from the paddle box during the famed, but totally illegal races that inspired travellers to join in the revelry.
Nigel wanders through his childhood tales on the banks of the Clyde and illustrates his many stories with photographs of the time including a collection of rare and well known photographs of the town of Gourock and more importantly the wonderful steamers that plied the coasts of that great river. The heyday of the "Costa del Clyde" from mid Victorian times until as late as the 1980 s was finally destroyed by the men in grey suits who decided that Gourock as well as many other Clyde towns would be better served by making them dormitory towns. Having ripped the heart and soul from the towns they have no doubt sat back and reflected upon their undoubted success, but many still remember the great days of the paddle steamers racing across the river to be the first to catch the disgorging train passengers who would spend their entire summer holidays sailing on the river and being entertained in the resort towns. Austin Macauley Publishers described their Editors comments on the book as "and how impressed they are by your dynamic, accessible writing style. It is exciting the see the passion and dedication which has gone into the creation of this work."
