A Classical Dictionary of India by John Garrett is a landmark compilation detailing the mythology, literature and antiquities of India. Structured as a dictionary, yet expansive in scope, it presents detailed entries on Hindu deities, mythical personages, ritual terms, schools of philosophy and even obscure genealogies that illuminate India's vast literary tradition. Drawing on authoritative sources such as Dr. John Muir, H. H. Wilson, Max Müller and Monier Williams, Garrett replaces hearsay with authentic extracts from Sanskrit and vernacular texts. The result is a reliable, expansive and richly textured guide to India's past and present. By uniting scholarship with accessibility, it invites readers to engage deeply with the complexity and beauty of India's heritage.

John Garrett (1815-1893), a Wesleyan missionary and celebrated linguist, arrived in Bangalore in the 1840s to establish the Wesleyan Mission Press. Subsequently, he founded the Central High School (now Central College) in 1858, serving as its inaugural Principal. A versatile scholar, he mastered Kannada (previously known as Canarese), Sanskrit, Tamil, Persian, German and Latin. Garrett's pioneering translation of the Bhagavad Gita into Kannada in 1846 marked a seminal moment in the development of regional literature. He also made invaluable contributions to Kannada lexicography, editing a Canarese–English dictionary and later authoring A Classical Dictionary of India.
