City in Indian Literature: Early Novelistic Encounters explores the representation of urban experiences in selected works from the colonial period by celebrated Indian authors. The term “early novelistic encounters” in the title refers to the portrayal of emerging forms and processes of urbanization in India during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as depicted in these novels. The book examines how these early urban developments are represented in terms of plot, character, and narrative strategies. By offering a kaleidoscopic view of modernity, it sheds light on the diverse aspects that shaped the early Indian city. Essential for students, scholars, and researchers interested in Indian Writing, Urban Aesthetics, and Colonial Indian Culture, this book provides valuable insights into the intersection of literature and urban transformation in colonial India.
