The two Volumes book is a classic study of Alexander the Great and his influence on the art of war. It is a highly fascinating and readable account of one of history’s greatest figures. It carefully examines Alexander’s achievements specially from military viewpoint. Along with clear and careful narration, the book brings out the great practical statesmanship and military genius of Alexander with the help of 237 charts, maps, plans of battles and tactical manoeuvres, cuts of armour, uniforms, siege devices and portraits. The first Volume covers the background to warfare in the east and the role of Philip II of Macedonia, Alexander’s father, through to the beginning of Alexander’s quest to carry out his father’s dream of conquering the Persian empire, his famous victory on the Issus river in 333 BC from which King Darius and his army fled in disarray and the beginning of 331 BC by which time Syria, Phoenicia and Egypt were under Alexander’s control. The second Volume takes Alexander from his becoming undisputed master of the world, as then known to the Greeks east of the Adriatic, after Darius’s death, through to Alexander’s own death at the age of 32 from fever. The book would be of great use to the students and scholars of History as well as of Military Science. It would also be of interest to the layman interested in History and the ancient art of war.

The author, Lt. Colonel Theodore Ayrault Dodge, is too well known a military writer to need any introduction. This military work of his won him great acclaim when it appeared first in 1890.
