Recent developments in Punjab have thrust the Sikhs and their political framework into the spotlight, prompting a re-examination of fundamental principles. Amidst a period of upheaval, both rulers and the ruled appear to have neglected their responsibilities. Political Philosophy of the Sikh Gurus, drawing from original sources such as the Adi Granth, Dasam Granth, Varan Bhai Gurdas and contemporaneous materials, addresses Sikh polity challenges by citing the authority of the Sikh Gurus. It primarily focuses on the political philosophy of the Sikh Gurus, initiated by Guru Nanak and expanded upon by successive Gurus. The author contends that Guru Nanak astutely comprehended the political landscape, responding to oppression from ruling elites and vested priestly interests. Guru Nanak laid the groundwork for a viable political alternative, offering a distinct political ideology and creating a model society devoid of oppressors and the oppressed. Notably, while condemning political oppression, the Sikh Gurus advocated for the use of moral force as a primary weapon against political adversaries. Paradoxical as it may sound, Guru Gobind Singh suggested a code of ethics even in the conduct of wars.

Dr. Kanwarjit Singh earned his master's degree in political science in 1980. Because of his keen interest in Comparative Religion, he also went in for a two-year course in the subject, graduating with first division from the Punjabi University, Patiala, in 1982. After serving as a Research Fellow at the Guru Nanak Foundation for three years, Kanwarjit Singh received his doctorate from the Panjab University, Chandigarh, for his thesis on “Perspectives on Sikh Political Philosophy and Ethics”. Later, he taught at the Gurmat College, Patiala.
