Drafting and pattern making are the basic necessities for making fashion garments. To become a successful fashion designer one needs to have a great command of drafting and pattern making. Fashion designing has come a long way in style, pattern making techniques and manufacture of garments. The phenomenal development experienced in the world of fashion garments in recent years has brought various techniques of drafting and pattern making to the forefront. A large variety of men’s and women’s garments are being created with the help of these techniques. Broadly, there are three pattern making techniques. The flat pattern technique is fundamental for a jewel-neck bodice, fitted and slender skirt and the pattern is made according to the measurements. The technique starts with the formation of block which is generally made of light weight cardboard parchment paper. Once the figure of the block has been developed by making a chain of mock-up garments, the ultimate block can be used in order to make pattern for lots of styles of clothes with different collar, neckline, dart placements, sleeves, etc. The second technique is drafting technique which is widely used in women’s and men’s clothes and dressline. It also involves drafting a pattern straight on top of pattern paper using different curves and straight edges. The third technique is pattern drafting technique which is generally used for detailed, distinctive and complex designs that cannot be made with the help of the other two techniques. This quintessential book on drafting and pattern making has a wide coverage of basics of fashion and construction of various types of garments. The processes have been illustrated with the help of measurement charts and figures with appropriate markings. It will prove highly useful to dressmakers, home sewers, garment making companies and professionals in fashion designing and fashion merchandising.
