World Trade and Development: Economic Integration, Regional Blocs and Non-Members is an edited Volume of research articles distributed over three parts. Economic Integration : Theoretical and Other Issues is the theme of the Part A and consists of five articles by K.C. Roy, C.A. Tisdell, J.C.H. Chai, K.P. Kalirajan, R.T. Shand and J.C. Debnath. Part B deals with European Economic Integration and the Indian Sub-Continent and five articles in this part are authored by S.N. Guha Thakurata, Debesh Bhowmik, Supriyo Bhattacharya, Santikumar Ghosh, Bipul Malakar & Haripada Bhattacharya. The last part on Economic Integration, Economic Adjustment and Trade : Other Countries has three articles by Z. Gao, C.A. Tisdell, B.C. Prasad and Raj Kumar Sen. Quite a few of these articles were presented in the EDS 1st International Seminar on “Recent Integration & Transformation of European Economies and their Impact on India and other LIEs”. A Rapporteur’s Report on this session is also included in the Appendix. This Volume is expected to fill up the research gap in this important area and would be of considerable benefit to policy makers in different trading countries whether belonging or not to any trading bloc.

Dr. Raj Kumar Sen, Secretary and Treasurer of the IIDS, teaches Economics in the Rabindra Bharati University, Calcutta. He is also the Hony. Secretary and Treasurer, Indian Economic Association. Dr. Kartik C. Roy, Secretary General of the IIDS, teaches Economics in the University of Queensland, Brisbane. Dr. Clement A. Tisdell, External Research Coordinator (Australia), IIDS, is Professor and Head, Department of Economics, University of Queensland, Brisbane. The International Institute for Development Studies (IIDS), is a multi-country, multi-disciplinary Research Institute with Head Office in Calcutta and External Research Centres in countries like Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Kenya, Malaysia, Malta, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, South Africa, Sweden, Tanzania, UK, USA, Venezuela etc. It is a Correspondent Institute of the International Centre for Economic Growth (ICEG), USA. IIDS is engaged since its inception in 1989, in conducting International/National Conferences, Seminars, executing Research Projects and publication of Books and Journal. It has published so far 16 edited Volumes since 1991 with the forthcoming titles listed below. It has completed two major research projects on Indian Capital Market (sponsored by Planning Commission, Government of India 1993) and Impact of Economic Reforms on Labour in Eastern and North-Eastern India (sponsored by the ICEG and coordinated by the ICRIER, New Delhi 1994). At present, it is engaged with a project on Labour and Rural Industrialisation — A Case Study in Burdwan District of West Bengal [sponsored by Ministry of Labour, Government of India, 1996]. It has organised four International Seminars in Calcutta (1993, 1994 April, 1994 Aug.) and at Bhubaneswar (1997). It is organising bi-annual International Conferences on Development and Future Studies, the first three being held in Jan. 1992 (Calcutta, India), Dec. 1993 (Perth, Australia) and July-Aug. 1995 (Helsinki, Finland). The IIDS 4th International Conference will be held in Bangi, Malaysia in September, 1997. The IIDS is also planning to publish a bi-annual journal titled, International Journal of Development Issues.
