Police officers are passionate about their work, and that is something to be cherished. However, passionate people have a pitfall, which is that they can lose sight of themselves and burn out. In this book, Klaas Schakel discusses police culture and its link with the struggle of police officers with factors over which they have no control. He shows how he himself has dealt with work-related stress and used this for personal growth.

This book can therefore be a valuable resource for police officers who are struggling with work-related stress. In addition, this book may be of interest to people who want to know more about the core qualities of police culture, and its pitfalls.

Klaas Schakel, 63, was a police officer for 35 years and later in life graduated as a social psychologist (MSc./2011). He also finshed a Master of Criminal Investigation (MSC/2013) and a post-academic course in investigative psychology (2019).

This book was an instant hit, when published in Dutch in 2020.

"Klaas's book is a must-read for every police leader. It does an excellent job of explaining what really matters and what we, as leaders, need to focus on. It has given me new insights. I finished it in less than a week. My advice: read it!" Leo de Haan, police chief and a marine veteran

Professor Dr. C. Fijnaut: "A meaningful book."

In 2024 he published "Stop Stalkers Fast!!!" (Amazon.com).

Schakel, Klaas: -

I am a social psychologist (MSc./2011), forensic investigator (MCI/2013), and investigative psychologist (2019), with a professional background spanning 35 years of operational police work. I am also a Navy veteran with six years of service.

I research and describe themes that arise from direct experience and reflection: police culture, dealing with stalkers, and the social and existential significance of religion. I write from the conviction that insight arises where practical knowledge, psychology, and critical thinking meet.

As a writer, I am inspired by psychological and humanistic traditions of thought that focus on autonomy, self-examination, and responsibility. I strive to make complex subjects accessible without simplifying them, and to invite readers to reflect rather than imposing conclusions on them.

For me, writing is a continuation of professional and intellectual research: a way to connect experience, knowledge, and observation and contribute to an open and substantive conversation about people, society, and meaning.
