Juni 1941' des sowjetischen Historikers Aleksandr Nekrič, "der Stalin für die anfänglichen Niederlagen der Sowjetarmee verantwortlich macht". Damit erreicht eine Auseinandersetzung auch den Westen, die im Juni 1967 im Parteiausschluss des Historikers gipfelt, der für ihn praktisch ein Verbot von beruflichen Kontakten und das Ende der Forschungstätigkeit bedeutet. Die 'Affäre' um Nekrič, die Hildermeier als den "bekanntesten Fall" eines kritischen Historikers bezeichnet, für den seine "Gegenargumente" gegen das offizielle Geschichtsbild nach Chrusčëvs Sturz "eine umgehende Ma regelung zur Folge hatten", hat in der zweiten Hälfte der 60er-Jahre ein beachtliches Echo in der UdSSR und international hervorgerufen. Trotzdem hat es bis heute keine tiefer gehende Forschungsaktivität gegeben, die sich mit diesen Ereignissen beschäftigt hätte. Die umfangreichste und detaillierteste Darstellung stammt nach wie vor von Nekrič selbst. Wenn in der Forschung der Fall Erwähnung findet, dann wird die Ächtung des Historikers i. d. R. wie von Hildermeier als Zeichen des Machtwechsels und einer damit verbundenen Neubewertung Stalins und des Krieges gewertet. Tumarkin etwa sieht das Verbot des Buches als Folge des sich unter Breznev etablierenden Kriegskultes, der keine Abweichungen von der "master narrative" mehr dulden konnte - und zu der gehörten unverrückbar die Plötzlichkeit des unerwarteten deutschen Angriffs, eine positive Darstellung Stalins und ein Übergehen der anfänglichen Niederlagen.
