Selbst der oft erwähnte Besuch Schuberts an Beethovens Sterbebett ist umstritten. Berichten zufolge beobachtete Schubert nach einer Fidelio Aufführung Beethoven aus der Ferne und mischte sich im Hause des Verlegers Steiner unter diejenigen, die den dort regelmä ig einkehrenden Beethoven über italienische Musik herziehend erleben wollten. Passend dazu bemerkt Beethovens Neffe Karl in dessen Konversationsheft, man lobe den Schubert sehr, man sage aber, er verstecke sich. Trotz seiner Scheu vor Beethoven war Schubert Zeit seines Lebens ein gro er Bewunderer der beethovenschen Kunst und umgekehrt wohl der Einzige unter den jüngeren Komponisten, den Beethoven anerkannt hat. Durch die Aufführungen im Konvikt-Orchester war Franz Schubert schon früh die Möglichkeit gegeben, Werke Haydns, Mozarts und Beethovens kennen zu lernen. Vor allem Beethovens Werke machten dabei einen tiefen Eindruck auf ihn. Sein Freund Joseph von Spaun berichtet, dass Beethovens zweite Sinfonie "sein Entzücken auf das äu erste steigerte", und nach einer Aufführung der Fünften Sinfonie soll der damals vielleicht achtzehnjährige Schubert zu Spaun gesagt haben: "Heimlich im Stillen hoffe ich wohl selbst noch etwas aus mir machen zu können, aber wer vermag nach Beethoven noch etwas zu machen?" Anhand dieses Ausspruchs werden zwei Dinge deutlich, die charakteristisch sind für Schuberts Umgang mit Beethoven: Zum Einen seine Bewunderung für Beethoven, zum Anderen die gro e Bedrängnis, die er mit diesem Namen verbindet.
