Damals, da ich viele Dinge nicht kannte, war ich optimistisch und habe mich damals dafür eingesetzt, aber schon sehr bald erkannt, da meine Hoffnungen eine Illusion waren." Gemeinsam mit einigen Hundert sozialdemokratischer und kommunistischer Delegierter hatte sich der junge Kommunist Wolfgang Leonhard am 21. April 1946 im Berliner Admiralspalast eingefunden, um einen entscheidenden Schritt ostdeutscher Nachkriegsgeschichte zu vollziehen: die Vereinigung von KPD und SPD zur Sozialistischen Einheitspartei Deutschlands. Drei Jahrzehnte nach Ausbruch des Zwistes in der Sozialdemokratischen Partei schien die verhängnisvolle Spaltung endlich überwunden - wenn auch nur in einem Teil Deutschlands. Begleitet von gro en Hoffnungen, aber auch von tiefer Besorgnis begann die SED ihre politische Arbeit, deren Resultate nicht nur den Idealisten Leonhard sehr bald enttäuschen sollten. "Wat, schon wieder 'ne Partei? Ick hab noch von der vorigen die Neese voll!" Wer wie dieser Berliner in der Nachkriegswelt des Frühsommers 1945 Tag für Tag ums Überleben kämpfen mu te, zeigte für Parteigründungen wie diejenige der KPD kaum Interesse. Das politische Leben, das sich trotz Not und Kriegszerstörungen, trotz aller Überlebenssorgen bereits im Deutschland der ersten Nachkriegsmonate wieder entfaltete, beschränkte sich auf kleinere Kreise, war gleichwohl von hoher Intensität.
