Jahrhunderts, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die Novelle "Carmen" ist heute nicht mehr aus der Weltliteratur herauszudenken. Die Figur der Carmen steht für zügellose Leidenschaft, Skrupellosigkeit, Unabhängigkeit, Auflehnung gegen das soziale System und die Nichteinhaltung gesellschaftlicher Normen, besonders im Kontext des streng religiösen, konservativen Spaniens von vor 150 Jahren. In der Novelle hat Prosper Mérimée ein Spanienbild kreiert, das heutzutage noch als aktuell gesehen und für kommerzielle Zwecke genutzt wird, das jedoch auch nicht unumstritten ist. Der Stoff an sich wurde nach Erscheinen der Novelle in vielerlei Weise aufgenommen und bearbeitet, u.a. in Form einer Oper und diverser Verfilmungen. Heute, rund 150 Jahre nach ihrem Erscheinen, ist Carmen immer noch ein Begriff, der nichts von seiner Lebendigkeit und seiner Mystik verloren hat. Immer neue Verfilmungen und Inszenierungen haben dazu beigetragen, dass sie nicht in Vergessenheit geriet. In der folgenden Arbeit soll im ersten Teil dargestellt werden, wie der Autor zu seinem Spanienbild kam. Ferner wird ein Überblick gegeben über seine Spanienreisen und wie diese sein Bild von der iberischen Halbinsel und sein Schreiben beeinflussten, au erdem wird eine Zusammenfassung der Handlung gegeben sowie eine Charakteristik der Carmen. Der zweite Teil befasst sich mit den verschiedenen Umsetzungen der Novelle, insbesondere mit der Oper von George Bizet, die Carmen nach anfänglichen "Startschwierigkeiten" zu ihrem Ruhm verhalf. Des weiteren wird auf einige der Verfilmungen eingegangen, insbesondere auf die Verfilmung von Carlos Saura Mitte der 80er Jahre, die half, das Carmen-Bild nachhaltig zu verändern.
