In this book, "Colvill Smiled," Minnesota-born-and-raised-historian Steve Hoffbeck tells the powerful Civil War stories of William Colvill and Martin Maginnis, officers of the First Minnesota Regiment.

The recollections, speeches, and writings of these two Minnesotans from Red Wing are woven into the narrative of the regiment's legendary deeds as they fought in Virginia, in Maryland, and in Pennsylvania.

The regiment started out with 1,000 men, amid cheers, hurrahs, and teary-eyed goodbyes; but the numbers were whittled down by bullets, by disease, and by wounds and capture. At Gettysburg, though so many were bleeding, they stood their ground and saved the day.

Few of their numbers remained in 1864, when they came marching home again.

The reader may better know what the Civil War was all about by reading of the lives and times of Colvill and Maginnis.

The fame of the 'Old First Minnesota' became a true legend, worthy to be remembered for all time by Minnesotans.

Hoffbeck, Steven R. R.: - The author of "Colvill Smiled." The Legend of the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Regiment at Gettysburg is Steven R. Hoffbeck, retired Professor of History at Minnesota State University Moorhead. A native Minnesotan, Steve Hoffbeck grew up as a dairy-farmer's son on the family farm located five miles north of Morgan. His first book, entitled The Haymakers: A Chronicle of Five Farm Families, was a narrative of the blessings, toil, and woes of farming. The Haymakers won a Minnesota Book Award in 2001. Hoffbeck's subsequent work, Swinging for the Fences: Black Baseball in Minnesota, explored the neglected history of almost-forgotten ballclubs and ballplayers in the North Star State. The book was awarded the Sporting News/SABR Baseball Research Award for 2005. Both books were imprinted by Minnesota Historical Society Press, one the state's premiere publishers, and both are still available online. His third book, Hillcrest Lutheran Academy, Centennial Beacon: Hillcrest's Hundred Years of Stories, 1916-2016, printed in 2017, told the history of the school located in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Dr. Hoffbeck has written many articles for Minnesota History magazine and in regional magazines, including Minnesota Monthly, Farm & Ranch Living, and Lake Country Journal. Since 2010, he has written over 300 short features for broadcast on Dakota Datebook, a program of North Dakota's Prairie Public Radio. Hoffbeck and his wife, Dianne, live in Barnesville, Minnesota, and have four adult children, and six grandchildren.
