Überlieferungen zur Medea waren Ausgangspunkt für Gedichte, Theaterstücke, Gemälde, Romane und Opern. Sie alle haben den Stoff, abgestimmt auf die Bedürfnisse ihres eigenen Zeitalters verschieden zu akzentuieren oder modellieren gewusst. Der römische Dichter Ovid etwa interessierte sich vor allem für die "hexenhafte Dimension" der Geschichte, während sein römischer Landsmann Seneca "ungezügelter Rhetorik und Strömen von Blut" besonderen Platz einräumte.1 Dabei blieb in den Verformungen des Mythos stets ein zentraler Kern bestehen, welcher von den Autoren gleichsam ummantelt wurde. Die wissenschaftliche Rezeption hat je nach Art dieser Ummantelung versucht, Medea innerhalb eines kulturell und moralisch irgendwie akzeptablen Deutungsmusters zu positionieren: zwischen Frau und Mann, liebender Mutter und Mörderin, Täterin und Opfer etc.2 Unter diesen dichotomen Begriffspaaren kommt der "Dazugehörigkeit und Fremdheit"3 eine besondere Rolle zu. Bereits in der rezeptionsgeschichtlich bedeutsamsten Fassung, 4 der des Athener Dramatikers Euripides, hat diese eine tragende Funktion. Diese wird noch gesteigert in der neuesten und radikal umgestalteten Version des Mythos. In "Medea. Stimmen" von 1996 stellt Christa Wolf der mordlüsternen Medea der antiken Fassung eine neue Medea entgegen. Dabei versucht sie, den Rahmen der reichen Überlieferung des Medea-Mythos nicht zu sprengen, sondern klug aus den vorhandenen Quellen und dem Stoff schöpfend eine alternative Möglichkeit des Mythos aufzuzeigen.5 Dabei wird man als Leser beständig mit der Fremde und Konstellationen von Fremdheit konfrontiert.
