This volume presents a comprehensive description of the language situations in several republics in the Volga-Ural region, covering the following topics: developments in language politics; educational systems; the mass media and the internet; current discussions on the situation and teaching of state languages in the republics; and, finally, issues relating to the protection of language diversity and aspects of language contacts. The approaches and methods applied in the volume involve primarily (socio)linguistic analyses describing the language situations in the Volga-Ural region. The analyses of the language situations are framed by an introductory essay outlining the volume's key concept - the language situation - while there are also two concluding essays exploring current tendencies and strategies in the language politics of the Federal centre. The book is written in cyrillic.

Даниэль Мюллер изучал славистику и историю Восточной Европы в университете г.Бохум. Oн работает научным сотрудником на кафедре славянского языкознания в Гиссенском университете имени Ю. Либига. Он писал и издавался по теории литературных языков и по другим темам славянской социолингвистики.

Моника Вингендер - Профессор славянского языкознания и директор научного центра «Восточная Европа» (GiZo) Гиссенского университета имени Ю. Либига. Её основными направлениям научных исследований являются социолингвистика, языковая политика и ситуация в Восточной Европе, типологии славянских стандартных языков и функционально-семантические поля.

Daniel Müller studied Slavistics and East European History at the University of Bochum. He works as a Research Assistant at the Chair of Slavic Linguistics at the Justus Liebig University Giessen. He has published and edited on the theory of standard languages and various topics in Slavic sociolinguistics.

Monika Wingender is full professor of Slavic Linguistics and managing director of the Giessen Center for Eastern European Studies (GiZo) at the Justus Liebig University Giessen. Her main areas of research are: sociolinguistics, language politics and situations in Eastern Europe, typologies of slavic standard languages, and functional-semantic fields.
