Der erste Band der auf neun Bände geplanten Ausgabe der Briefe von Therese Huber (1764-1829) enthält die Briefe bis zu ihrem 40. Lebensjahr und dokumentiert damit ihre Entwicklung vom jungen Mädchen (Göttingen, Schweiz, Gotha) über die erste Ehe mit Georg Forster (Wilna, Göttingen, Mainz), die zweite Ehe mit Ludwig Ferdinand Huber (Neuchâtel, Bôle, Tübingen, Stuttgart) und den Beginn eigener Arbeiten als Schriftstellerin und Übersetzerin bis zu der bevorstehenden Übersiedlung der Familie nach Ulm. Die Briefe sind sowohl Lebens- als auch Zeitzeugnisse einer erfolgreichen und berühmten Frau um 1800, die sowohl Ehefrau, Hausfrau und Mutter als auch Schriftstellerin und Redakteurin war. Sie machen die Herausbildung und Entwicklung einer individuellen Moral (Weiblichkeit, Freundschaft, Liebe, Ehe, Erziehung, Pflicht, Tod) nachvollziehbar, die in Auseinandersetzung mit zeittypischen Vorstellungen und eigenen Erfahrungen gewonnen und später an die ab 1801 in Colombier/Schweiz lebende Tochter Therese Forster weitergegeben wird.
Das Spiel- und Sprachverhalten der eigenen Kinder wird insbesondere in der kontinuierlich geführten (französischen) Korrespondenz mit der ältesten Tochter beschrieben und reflektiert. Die Briefe dieses Bandes lassen den allmählichen Aufbau eines Lektüreverhaltens und kritischer Urteilskraft sowie das Interesse an eigenem Schreiben und die Schulung sprachlicher Ausdrucksfähigkeit erkennen. Sie bieten Einblicke in das gesellschaftliche und kulturelle Leben der Universitätsstädte Göttingen und Wilna sowie Mainz, zeigen Wahrnehmungsvermögen und Reaktion auf die Begegnungen mit der Fremde (Schweiz, Wilna) und vermitteln vielfältige Erfahrungen aus der Zeit der Französischen Revolution und ersten Republikgründung in Deutschland. Unter den Partnern der überlieferten Korrespondenz dieser Jahre sind vor allem Christian Gottlob und Georgine Heyne, Luise Mejer, Samuel Thomas Soemmerring und Therese Forster mit umfangreichen an sie gerichteten Briefkonvoluten hervorzuheben.
