As más notícias: as realidades de um mundo pós-Covid-19 trarão novos desafios às cidades e aos sistemas de transporte em particular - de sistemas metroferroviários, redes de transportes públicos, a plataformas de transporte compartilhado e até serviços de micromobilidade. Isso porque, agora, a mobilidade humana é um vetor para doenças, o que provoca o medo nas pessoas devido ao período em distanciamento social.E à medida em que a pandemia for diminuindo, espera-se que a atividade econômica seja retomada lentamente, pelo menos inicialmente, e o transporte público provavelmente continuará enfrentando uma demanda ainda reduzida. Sendo assim, o transporte público precisará de suportes públicos para fornecer qualidade de serviço e reavivar a confiança dos passageiros que possam ter medo de compartilhar o espaço com outras pessoas. Mas há uma enorme oportunidade aqui: desviar-se de um vetor não intencional em direção a um conjunto intencional de sistemas interconectados para prevenir, detectar e conter surtos. Como um otimista, acredito que alcançar esse pivô exigirá transformações radicais, com resultados utópicos e distópicos igualmente possíveis em relação a forma como as pessoas irão se deslocar nas cidades. Com esses resultados divergentes em mente, aqui estão duas das transformações mais prováveis.Este portanto é um momento para repensar o modelo de financiamento para apoiar e transformar o transporte público. Financiar o transporte público apenas com tarifas tem sido um desafio contínuo e, em uma economia restrita, os fundos públicos para diminuir cada vez mais essa lacuna nem sempre podem ser uma solução viável, especialmente nos estados com problemas fiscais. Portanto os programas de estímulo econômico poderiam explorar abordagens como: usar parcela do IPVA, pedágios urbanos, gerenciamento de estacionamento, para arrecadar recursos, reduzir a demanda por veículos particulares e incentivar o uso de transporte público integrado com as caminhadas e uso da bicicleta.
