Kempowski erz�hlt in seinem 1978 erschienenen Roman die Geschichte der Kaufmannsfamilien Kempowski (Rostock) und de Bonsac (Hamburg) vom sp�ten 19. Jahrhundert bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg. Er schildert die Mentalit�t des Gro b�rgertums, die sich durch Obrigkeitstreue, Bildungsanspruch und Statusdenken auszeichnete. Um die erz�hlten Familiengeschichten und -mentalit�ten als allgemeine Zeiterscheinung herauszustellen, wird der Haupterz�hler durch verschieden Nebenerz�hler aus dem Umfeld beider Familien erg�nzt, die ihre Erinnerungen zur Geschichte beisteuern.
