Democracy requires checks and balances. In places where people have the right to vote but lack checks and balances, turmoil, revolution, and violence will be unending. Democracy also requires a prerequisite-good condition of the people. A devout Christian faith fosters sincere adherence to laws and traditions. Only under this prerequisite can a democratic system avoid self-corruption and degeneration.
In the 21st century, the United States is plunging into the crisis of degenerate democracy. On one hand, the implementation of welfare state policies is continuously eroding the once God-revering, hardworking spirit rooted in Christian faith that defined the American Dream. Increasingly, more citizens rely on government aid, abandoning self-reliance and personal effort. On the other hand, pluralism and waves of immigration are driving American self-identity toward ambiguity and nihilism. Over the past few decades, as both the government and society in the United States gradually abandoned Christian faith and traditional American values, identity politics has run rampant across the land. On the global stage, while striving to integrate into the international community, America has lost itself.
On November 5, 2024, President Trump won the election, and the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement swept across the nation. Pure democracy inevitably leads to tyranny, and the MAGA movement serves as a resistance and correction to degenerative democracy-this profound crisis in America. Thanks be to God! The reason America can still correct its course is that the condition of its people has not been entirely corrupted. If the day ever comes when welfare-dependent voters outnumber those who live by the work of their own hands, then America will no longer be able to correct itself. This is precisely the reality facing Europe, the United Kingdom, and Canada today.
