A tried-and-true phonics program to help children achieve a solid foundation in literacy

As a language arts educator, Lacresha V. McCollough spent years honing her phonics and reading instruction skills, and after witnessing a decline in reading comprehension post the COVID-19 pandemic, she realized the need to improve youth literacy was more vital than ever. And with that goal in mind, the 4it Phonics to Reading program was born.

In 4it Phonics A-Z Workbook, early learners can become great readers by engaging in the practice of the 4 its: hear it, see it, say it, and write it. Using the science of reading and evidence-based best teaching

practices, this workbook offers a systematic and explicit approach for expanding literacy in early and developing readers by introducing three letters a week. Rather than teaching the alphabet in chronological order, McCollough teaches through application, allowing learners to use their knowledge of acquired sound-spellings to create and read words. By connecting targeted sound-spelling with text, the 4it approach helps reinforce letter sounds and recognition. Centered on the alphabetic principle, the workbook features:

  • English Language Arts curriculum-based activities
  • Over 70 phonemic awareness activities
  • Over 70 phonological awareness activities that progress from simple to complex
  • short stories to accompany each letter of the alphabet to reinforce the lesson
  • Engaging activities to teach and expand foundational skills and standards for reading
  • Over 300 skill building pages that provide practice with letter-recognition, phonics, segmenting and blending sounds, spelling, reading, high-frequency words, handwriting, and comprehension

McCollough, Lacresha: - Lacresha V. McCollough is a literacy coach and the creator of the 4it Phonics to Reading program. She is a former Title 1 reading teacher and has worked in education for 17 years, including six years as a lead reading teacher. She holds a bachelor's degree in early childhood education and a master's degree in curriculum instruction with an emphasis in literacy. A mother of four, she enjoys spending time with family and friends as she continues to follow God's plan for her life.
