Students pursue problems they're curious about, not problems they're told to solve.

Creating a math classroom filled with confident problem solvers starts with challenges discovered in the real world, not a sequence of prescribed problems.

In this groundbreaking book, Gerald Aungst offers five powerful principles for instilling a culture of learning in your classroom: Conjecture, Collaboration, Communication, Chaos, and Celebration.

Aungst shows how to:

  • Embrace collaboration and purposeful chaos to engage students in productive struggle
  • Put each chapter's principles into practice using a variety of strategies, activities, and technology tools
  • Introduce lasting changes in your classroom through a gradual shift in processes and behaviors

Gerald Aungst

I have 23 years of experience in education as a teacher and curriculum developer. I spent 18 years teaching math at the elementary level as both a classroom teacher and gifted support specialist, and developed many of these strategies during that time. In addition, I taught and coordinated a summer remedial math and reading program for six years and have worked as an Instructional Support specialist, leading teams of teachers to develop and implement interventions for struggling learners. For the past 5 years, I have been a district administrator supervising mathematics curriculum and instruction. My work includes developing standards-based curriculum and leading professional development of teachers.

A published author, my work has appeared in publications by ISTE, ASCD, and Linworth. I have written chapters in two books: Collaborating to Meet Standards: Teacher-Librarian Partnerships for K-6 (2nd ed.), by Toni Buzzeo, and Teaching Literacy in the Digital Age: Inspiration for All Levels and Literacies, by Mark Gura. I have also co-authored the articles "Three Schools for the 21st" (in the February 2011 issue of Educational Leadership) and "Proceed With Caution" (in the February/March 2011 issue of EdTech: Focus on K12.

I am also a nationally recognized leader in mathematics, assessment, digital literacy, and digital tools. I am a member of the Alliance for Excellent Education's Project 24 Team of Experts and the National Association for Gifted Children's 2012 Administrator Task Force. I have been cited as a mathematics expert in Mark Barnes′s forthcoming book on assessment and feedback in the classroom, and as an expert in co-teaching and differentiation in Anne Beninghof′s book "Co-Teaching That Works". I have also presented at local districts, and state and national conferences on mathematics, student engagement, and digital technology, including NAGC, ISTE, Educon, Carnegie-Mellon University, and Digital Learning Day.

I have an active presence online and in social media. I am a regular contributor to Mark Barnes's blog "Brilliant or Insane" (http: //www.brilliant-insane.com/author/geraldaungst). My posts there draw several thousand page views each. I also recently conducted a webinar for edWeb on problem solving culture which had about 250 participants. That webinar was recently highlighted at eSchool News (http: //www.eschoolnews.com/2014/09/17/problem-solving-culture-904/) and featured in the CEC Smartbrief and Math Education Smartbrief during the week of September 15, 2014. An article I wrote on Webb's Depth of Knowledge was recently posted at Edutopia (http: //www.edutopia.org/blog/webbs-depth-knowledge-increase-rigor-gerald-aungst). As of October 3, 2014, that post has received over 39,000 views, and it has been listed on the "Popular" section of their front page for more than two weeks. For the past three years ASCD has invited me to cover their annual conference as a member of their education blogger press corps. I am also the developer of the websites All About Explorers (http: //www.allaboutexplorers.com) and Connected Teachers (http: //www.connectedteachers.org). All About Explorers, launched in 2006, averages 19,000 hits per day. Connected Teachers is still in its infancy as it was only started in March 2014.
