About The Book

El herpes z�ster (HZ) es una enfermedad que acompa�a desde antiguo a la humanidad, si bien es cierto que los cl�sicos no diferenciaban entre herpes z�ster y otras enfermedades eruptivas de la piel en sus escritos. No fue hasta finales del s. XVIII cuando se estableci� una forma de diferenciar el herpes z�ster de la viruela, y a finales del siglo XIX se distingui� de la erisipela.

El HZ est� causado por el virus herpes tipo 3 o virus varicela-z�ster (VVZ), uno de los ocho virus conocidos de la familia Herpesviridae. Tiene distribuci�n mundial y la susceptibilidad es universal. El �nico reservorio es el ser humano, y la transmisi�n se produce de persona a persona por contacto directo a trav�s de la piel, por v�a respiratoria o por v�a conjuntiva.

Se produce por la reactivaci�n end�gena del VVZ. Es decir, para desarrollar un HZ, es preciso haber sufrido una primoinfecci�n, generalmente en la infancia, que aparecer� en forma de varicela (cl�nica o subcl�nica). Una vez superada la primoinfecci�n, el VVZ queda acantonado en los ganglios sensitivos hasta su eventual reactivaci�n.

El HZ consiste en una erupci�n p�pulo-vesicular aguda caracter�stica, muy dolorosa, diseminada de forma t�pica seg�n la distribuci�n del dermatoma inervado por un ganglio sensitivo, de forma unilateral y sin sobrepasar la l�nea media.

Aunque la mortalidad por HZ no es muy elevada, las secuelas que puede originar son importantes. La principal de ella, por afectaci�n de la calidad de vida de quien la sufre, es la neuralgia post herp�tica. Aparecer� hasta en un 20% de aquellos que sufran un HZ, pudiendo llegar a ser francamente limitante en la vida de quienes la padecen.
