La sintonía de fondo que acompañaba a la voz grave y llena de seguridad del locutor aportaba un mayor grado de dramatismo a sus palabras.
-Según un tuit -continuó Dorsey-, publicado por primera vez hace diez días en un perfil anónimo, esta noche, víspera del nuevo año, cuando falten 60 segundos para las doce, todos los terminales móviles serán bloqueados y sus pantallas solamente mostrarán una cuenta atrás. El que ya ha sido etiquetado como El Hackeo de Nochevieja se ha convertido en el fenómeno viral de estas navidades y nadie sabe si se trata de una simple broma de quinceañeros o es el ataque minuciosamente planificado de una banda terrorista. Conectaremos con la sede central de Twitter en San Francisco, California; con el Pentágono, en Virginia; y hablaremos con Michael Jenkins, experto en terrorismo internacional y en tecnologías sociales de la Universidad de Washington, en Seattle.

Efectivamente, quedaban menos de 24 horas para el cambio de año y apenas se sabía nada sobre la veracidad de ese hackeo que empezaba a producir una elevada inquietud entre los estadounidenses. Ni los tecnólogos, ni los expertos en terrorismo, ni el mismísimo Departamento de Defensa habían podido esclarecer la magnitud de la posible amenaza, pero la versión que más había calado entre la población aseguraba que, al final de dicha cuenta atrás, el teléfono móvil explotaría causando la muerte a todas las personas que estuvieran en un radio de dos metros.
Como casi todo el mundo portaba constantemente uno o, incluso, dos terminales, la imagen de un país diezmado de la noche a la mañana comenzaba a provocar escenas de pánico colectivo y deseos de venganza anticipada.
