About The Author

Wooster Woodruff Beman (1850–1922) was an influential American mathematician and educator. A long-time University of Michigan professor, he collaborated with David Eugene Smith on foundational textbooks—Plane and Solid Geometry (1895), Higher Arithmetic (1897), Academic Algebra (1902)—and translated key works like Fink’s A Brief History of Mathematics (1900) and David Eugene Smith (1860–1944) was a trailblazing American mathematics educator, historian, and editor. A Syracuse Ph.D., he taught at Cortland, Michigan, Brockport, and from 1901–1926 at Teachers College, Columbia, where he integrated math history into teacher training He led the MAA (1920–21), History of Science Society (1927), edited major journals, authored textbooks and histories, and donated a vast collection of books, instruments, and manuscripts to Columbia.
