About The Author

Jean Jousse (1760–1837) was a French music educator and theorist known for simplifying music instruction through his Catechism of Music. Some editions included contributions from theorists like Albrechtsberger and Burrowes, along with piano guides and glossaries. Widely used in English-speaking countries, Jousse’s works played a significant role in 19th-century music education and foundational music training and Louis Charles Elson (1848–1920) was a prominent American music educator, historian, and critic. He wrote extensively on music theory, history, and education, striving to make music accessible to all. His key works include A Catechism of Music, Curiosities of Music, and The History of American Music, as well as music dictionaries and encyclopedias. Elson also edited folk song collections and contributed to musical journalism. His clear, insightful writing helped shape American musical knowledge in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
