Throw this important work an endeavor has been made to supply the long-felt want of a Hindu Classical Dictionary. The late professor Wilson projected such a work, and forty years ago announced his intention of preparing one for the Oriental Translation Fund, but he never accomplished his design. This is not the first attempt to supply the void. Others also tried in this venture but not get success. It has not obtained favour in Europe, and it cannot be considered any obstacle in the way of a more complete and systematic work. The main portion of this work consists of mythology, but religion is bound up with mythology, and in many points the two are quite inseparable. The book is the product of extensive study of this subject. It must be understood from the first that this work is derived entirely from the publications of European scholar. The author has sought to present a summary of the present condition of knowledge of the religion and mythology of Ancient India. It is necessary to specify all the works that have been used in the compilation of this book. This book is immensely beneficial to all.

John Dowson M.R.A.S. was a British indologist. A noted scholar of Hinduism, he taught in India for much of his life. His book Classical Dictionary of Hindu Mythology remains one of the most comprehensive and authoritative works on the topic. Dowson's duties as professor suggested his Grammar of the Urdu or Hindustani Language (1862), and he also translated one of the tracts of the Ikhwānu-s-Safa, or Brotherhood of Purity. His theory of the Invention of the Indian Alphabet, claiming a Hindu origin, met with little support.
