Cosa?
Questo sibilo.
Sembrava un fischio lievissimo, come uno spiffero di vento.
Ma aumentava di intensità, per ogni secondo che passava.
Lo sentirono tutti, anche fuori.
Continuava ad aumentare, sempre di più, sempre più forte.
Aiuto! È insopportabile! gridò Sven.
Ethan si portò le mani alle orecchie, cercando di ripararsi dal rumore, ma gli entrava ugualmente in testa e penetrava ogni suo pensiero.
I timpani gli stavano esplodendo e un rivoletto di sangue colò fuori dal padiglione auricolare.
"Sto per svenire!" pensò.
L'aria gli bruciava nel petto.
Poi tutto cessò, senza alcuna spiegazione.
Non s'era nemmeno accorto che, nel frattempo, si era accasciato in posizione fetale.
Si alzò e si guardò intorno, anche i suoi compagni erano crollati a terra.
Asciugò il sangue prima di farlo seccare, incurante di aver sporcato la manica della camicia più bella che aveva.
Dette un'occhiata fuori dalla finestra e, anche lì, stavano cercando di riprendersi.
L'astronave era immobile.
I cristalli avevano assunto un colore blu elettrico vicino al centro, andando poi a sfumare verso il bordo con tonalità dall'azzurro al glicine.
Era incredibile vedere quella distesa dello stesso colore del mare, davanti la scuola.
Ma cos'è stato? chiese Gabriel, ancora stordito.
La nave iniziò a tremare, facendo vibrare l'aria.
All'inizio sembrava una vibrazione appena percettibile, ma nell'arco di qualche attimo diventò fortissima.
"È insopportabile!"
E poi tutto si quietò.
I cristalli caduti iniziarono a pulsare di blu, dal loro cuore: sembravano le onde di un mare in tempesta.
Ethan guardò il suo professore prendere in mano uno dei cristalli ed osservarlo più da vicino.
Lo vide aggrottare lo sguardo, ma successe qualcosa che nessuno si sarebbe aspettato.
Il cristallo, fino a quel momento solido, lampeggiò di una luce accecante, si trasformò in vapore e, come spinto da un vento invisibile, si assorbì nel suo corpo.
Il professore si irrigidì un attimo, fu preso dagli spasmi e, infine, cadde a terra.
Immobile.
Morto.
Il cortile fu tempestato da flash di luce ed un momento dopo, tutto il personale, nessuno escluso, era riverso per terra.
Morto.
Julia lanciò un gridolino e svenne.
Mentre il panico afferrava il cuore dei suoi amici.
