This book is an updated Hindi Dictionary, offering more comprehensive coverage of the Hindi language than previous editions. While the Hindi language is spoken by millions across India, it lacks an adequate reference. With over 50,000 words and forms, including 25,000 new ones collected from various sources, it is a valuable resource for those studying Hindi. It aims to facilitate the study of Hindi literature, catering to the vernacular masses from the western border of Bengal to the Punjab and the Himalayas to the borders of the Madras Presidency. It recognizes the composite nature of Hindi, with influences from Sanskrit, Arabic, and Persian, making it a comprehensive reference for students and scholars alike. The author acknowledges the contributions of several esteemed scholars and colleagues in creating this comprehensive dictionary.

About The Compiler: John Drew Bate (1836–1923) was born in Plymouth and trained at Regent’s Park College, London. In 1865, he embarked on a journey to India to work for the Baptist Missionary Society, coinciding with his marriage to Beatrice Tagg. After a period in East Bengal, he was stationed in Allahabad in 1868, where he served until his retirement in 1897. Bate was a member of the Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1873 and the Royal Asiatic Society in 1881. He authored a Hindi Dictionary in 1875, adding 25,000 new words and forms, considered the standard text upon his death. Bate contributed articles to various publications and published "An Examination of the Claims of Ishmael as viewed by Muhammadans."
