William Williams’s A Dictionary of the New Zealand Language: To Which Is Added a Selection of Colloquial Sentences (first published 1844) is the foundational Māori–English lexicon compiled by an early missionary. It provides over 5,500 Māori entries with English definitions, grammatical notes, and illustrative colloquial phrases, drawing on church, conversational, and regional usage. Revised through multiple editions (including 1852’s concise grammar) and updated by his descendants in 1871 and 1892, it remained the definitive Māori reference well into the 20th century. Its enduring impact spans linguistic scholarship, translation, and cultural preservation.

William Williams (1800–1878) was a pioneering Anglican missionary, linguist, and the first Bishop of Waiapu in New Zealand. Deeply committed to Māori engagement, he translated religious texts into te reo Māori and played a key role in promoting literacy and Christianity among Māori communities. His landmark Dictionary of the New Zealand Language and a Concise Grammar (1844) remains a foundational resource in Māori linguistics. Williams also authored works on New Zealand’s colonial conflicts and missionary efforts, including Christianity among the New Zealanders (1867). His scholarship and ecclesiastical leadership significantly shaped early cross-cultural relations and the Anglican Church’s presence in New Zealand.
