This work delves into the Grammar and Dictionary of the Malay Language, complemented by an introductory Dissertation, presented across two comprehensive volumes. The text explores the linguistic correlation from Madagascar to Easter Island, spanning over two hundred degrees of longitude and seventy of latitude equivalent to a fifth of the Earth's surface. Encompassing the Indian Archipelago, Philippines, North and South Pacific islands, and Madagascar, the region hosts diverse races, contributing to varied states of civilization influenced by monsoons, which play a role in the extensive language dissemination under examination.

John Crawfurd FRS (1783–1868), a Scottish physician and the last Resident of Singapore, shaped British colonial history. Beginning in India and Penang, he immersed himself in Malay culture. As Resident Governor at Yogyakarta post the Java Invasion (1811), he navigated diplomatic missions to Siam and Cochinchina (1821). Appointed Singapore's Resident in 1823, Crawfurd played a crucial role in treaties, impacting the region. Beyond politics, he contributed to orientalism, history, economics, and ethnology. Advocating free trade, Crawfurd's parliamentary efforts left a lasting impact. His diverse career, including the 1826 Burma mission, influenced debates on colonization and India's economic conditions.
