This book is a compilation of three books that were written as a picture guide to fossil plants and includes a few marine fossil organisms found in close association with the coal measures in the central Appalachian region. The first section is a guide to Pennsylvanian (Carboniferous) age fossil plants and trees found in the Appalachian coalfield of Virginia. It is the first publication on the plant fossils of Virginia. The collections were from the areas of southwestern Virginis, Eastern Kentucky, and a portion of western West Virginia. The fossils are sorted by groups and the specimens sampling sites are listed by coal seam horizon and geographic location. Short descriptions of each group of fossil types are provided. This publication has been designed with the amateur rock hound as well as a visual guide for the more advanced collectors. Explanation of the different groups of plants in as close to layman's terms as possible. 189 Plates, 8210 pictures and 125 illustrations, the majority of which are in full color.
