A History of Ornament: Ancient and Medieval is a comprehensive study by architect and historian Alfred Dwight Foster Hamlin, exploring decorative art from ancient civilizations through the medieval period. Published in the early 20th century, the book examines ornamentation across cultures, including Egyptian, Assyrian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Islamic, and Gothic styles. Hamlin analyzes the symbolic, structural, and aesthetic roles of ornament in architecture and design, supported by detailed illustrations. Intended for students, architects, and art historians, the book emphasizes the cultural and historical significance of ornamentation as an evolving artistic expression rooted in human creativity and societal development.

Alfred Dwight Foster Hamlin (1855–1926) was an American architect, educator, and author born in Constantinople to missionary parents. A graduate of Amherst College, he studied architecture in Boston and Paris before teaching at Columbia University's School of Engineering, where he served as director from 1903 to 1912. He wrote extensively on architecture, including the influential A Text-Book of the History of Architecture (1906) and History of Architectural Styles (1893). He also co-authored Modern School Houses (1910) and contributed to European and Japanese Gardens (1902). Hamlin died in 1926 after being struck by a car in Manhattan.
