How is leading different from managing? What kind of leadership is best for engineers and technical professionals? How can anybody learn this kind of leadership? Randall P. Engineers becoming managers may acquire a few new skills, but not many of these skills are different from those required to perform engineering; and this is where the new manager gets into trouble. When most speak of managing, it is usually restricted to a "managing only" which is analytical in nature and reinforced by how engineers think. Going beyond managing to leading requires a new perspective involving the human element and the acceptance of chance. Even as far as leading goes, engineering personnel require a special type of leadership for their work as both technical and creative professionals. Randall makes this complex subject simple for engineers, managers, and executives by reducing it to a model from which they can learn.

Randall P. Vendetti, P.E. is Principal of Techne Synergies LLC, a consulting firm in engineering management and product development. He has worked in business and industry leading to positions as department head of engineering for a number of capital equipment manufacturers. He is a licensed professional engineer, holds a BS in mechanical engineering degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University and an Executive Master of Technology Management (EMTM) degree from Stevens Institute of Technology.
