The author of this book needs no introduction to the Malayalam readers. His services in the field of literature and other allied subjects are so widely appreciated. This short work was written while he was a College student but modified as the lapse of time necessitated, gives a sketch of the origin and growth of the Malayalam literature. He begins with an account of the country where Malayalam is spoken, and scientifically deals with the origin of the language. It deals with all the phases of the literary history of Kerala in a lucid, logical, correct and concise manner, explains present day tendencies and developments, and exhibits the several influences to which the authors of Kerala have reacted from time to time. This book is a concise, well researched and informative book on the origin and growth of literature in Malayalam language, through its various historical stages. The book has 10 chapters that notice: the Malayalam language; Malayalees who have writer in Sanskrit, Malayalam literature, Middle Malayalam, modern Malayalam and contemporary Malayalam literature. This book is a reprint of the 1939 edition.

T. K. Krishna Menon was an Indian-born scholar, author and editor. He has 36 works in 67 publications in 1 language and 149 library holdings to his credit. His genres of works are history, criticism, interpretation, etc. He is the author of various books such as -- The Dravidian culture and its diffusion; Speeches and writings; Landmarks in Malayalam literature; Progress of Cochin; and Primer of Malayalam Literature.
