While celebrating the birth of King Audanot's twin sons, Bryand and Daron, a magic trick goes horribly wrong, setting the throne room ablaze. The babies are rushed to safety. But by the time they are reunited with their parents, no one can determine which of the twins escaped the womb first and is the rightful heir to the throne. Audanot delays his decision until it becomes clear to the King that Bryand deserves to be his successor. But before he can make his wishes known, Audanot dies of a mysterious illness. Bryand and Daron are forced to compete in a joust for the right to rule. Not taking any chances, Daron employs the talents of an assassin, a master of poisons, in order to improve his chances. Unfortunately, things don't go as planned, and Daron is banished from the kingdom. But Daron doesn't care to move unless it's to the King's apartment. Risking all, he manages to steal his brother's identity and winds up being crowned King. Things don't go as planned - again - when Bryand escapes. The King's brother - who is really the rightful King - is now a fugitive in his own country, being pursued as if he was Daron - or maybe not. In an attempt to find the few loyal friends he has left, Bryand blunders his way through a series of misadventures, carting along with him his loyal retainer, a recently widowed woman, and her two unruly children, protecting them from various monsters and demons, marauders, and man-eating plants.
