First published in London in 1614, The Private School of Defence is George Hale's scathing critique of public fencing teachers. He accuses them of teaching "all men alike, without observing the nature of the scholar," of betraying their students' techniques to potential enemies, and of being "so ignorant that they could rather do than make demonstration." Written as both a technical manual and a polemic, the work argues that public fencing teachers are fundamentally flawed: offering inconsistent instruction, relying on brute force or theatricality, and neglecting the specific needs of individual students. Hale proposes a methodical and geometrical approach to fencing, grounded in principles of strength, judgment, timing, distance, and place. Hale's self-description as "a man myself defective" profoundly shapes his treatise. Again and again, he returns to the theme of adaptation: how a weak man may overcome a strong one, how a short fencer may defeat one with greater reach, how skill and judgment may compensate for physical limitation. For Hale, the science of defence is about overcoming disadvantage. His insistence that teaching must adapt to the learner's body and temperament anticipates modern educational theory by centuries.
