""A Sailor's Log"" is a memoir written by Robley D. Evans, who served in the United States Navy for forty years. In this book, Evans shares his personal experiences and recollections of his time in the Navy, from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. He covers a wide range of topics, including his early years as a cadet, his experiences on various ships and stations, and his involvement in several important events, such as the Spanish-American War and the Boxer Rebellion. Through his stories, Evans provides a unique perspective on the life of a sailor during this period, including the challenges, the adventures, and the camaraderie that comes with serving in the Navy. Overall, ""A Sailor's Log"" is a fascinating glimpse into the life of a naval officer during a time of great change and upheaval in world history.1901. Illustrated. During the course of a colorful naval career Evans rose to the rank of Rear Admiral and had two destroyers named after him. One example of Evan's character can be found in the following anecdote: Because of his serious wounds, as he lay helpless in the hospital, he was approached by a surgeon who suggested amputation. Evans pulled out a pistol from under his pillow and said he would shoot at the first sign of a surgeon's saw. The surgeon concluded that Evans would die, and did not press for amputation. Obviously, the young ensign survived. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
